Montreal has transformed an empty building into a 40-space warming shelter to help the city’s vulnerable population this winter
It used to be part of a construction site for the STM, but now it’s all about helping those in need. With emergency shelters full every night, this new space is a welcome addition.
City officials are making sure the shelter is run by a specialized security service that knows how to handle homelessness issues. Plus, social workers will be on-site to provide support.
Mayor Valérie Plante emphasized that the city is filling gaps left by the provincial government. She pointed out that Montrealers shouldn’t have to shoulder the burden of social services that should be funded by Quebec.
In addition to this new shelter, the city is also boosting capacity at the Lucien-Saulnier warming shelter, increasing it from 30 to 50 spaces. This place opened in December and is located in a former municipal office building in Old Montreal.
