Montreal: The police chiefs in Quebec are really worried about school transportation safety. They’ve got some alarming stats to share.

This year alone, 320 people got hurt in school transportation incidents. That’s a big jump, and it’s the first time we’re seeing these numbers from regional police.

Montérégie is one of the worst-hit areas, with 79 victims. That’s more than one a week during the school year! Montreal isn’t far behind with 54 victims, while other regions like Capitale-Nationale and Laurentides reported 48 and 17, respectively.

A bus driver named Mohamed Elrhoul mentioned that he sees unsafe driving around school buses every single day. He said it’s been getting worse since 2021, which is pretty concerning.

In fact, injuries from these incidents have jumped from 220 in 2021 to 320 this year. Over the last six years, there have been 1,652 victims related to school transportation.

Patrick Bélanger, a police chief, emphasized that everyone—parents, grandparents, and the community—needs to step up to keep kids safe.

To tackle this issue, the ADPQ has teamed up with the Montreal Police to launch a new awareness video. They hope it will help improve road safety and encourage respect between citizens and law enforcement.
